BELFAST COAL MINE: POWERING
SOCIO-ECONOMIC GROWTH AND JOB CREATION

Exxaro’s Belfast Coal Mine in the Mpumalanga Province fo rms a central part of the
mining company’s commitment to powering better lives in Africa and beyond. This
project is a ground-breaking achievement for Exxaro and the country, as Belfast Coal
Mine is the first-of-its-kind digital mine. The R3.3 billion mine has already started
producing A-grade thermal coal as of 12 September 2019, six months ahead of schedule.
During construction, the Belfast Coal Mine generated broader socio-economic returns,
including R293 million expenditure targeted towards local companies, with R155 million
and R123 million going to the Emakhazeni and Enkangala municipalities respectively.
The mine is expected to create around 4 706 jobs in the area throughout its 17-year
lifespan, advancing 15 529 beneficiaries.
