Eighth SALTA Annual Awards for the South African Exchange Traded Product (ETP) Industry - 3 April 2025
Johannesburg, Friday 4 April 2025Satrix Managers (Pty) Ltd, continued their dominance of the annual South African Listed Tracker Awards or the 'SALTAs'. The awards celebrate excellence among issuers of Exchange Traded Products in South Africa. At a function held at the JSE on Thursday 3rd April, Satrix won 10 of the 21 SALTA Awards made to the industry for achievements in 2024.
With the South African Exchange Traded Product (ETP) industry now in its 25th year of existence in South Africa, the SALTA Awards this year take on an extra significance.
From the first ETF listed on the JSE in November 2000 (Satrix 40), there are now 276 listed ETPs, issued by 13 different issuing houses and covering a multitude of tracked indices, as well as 91 actively managed products, with some 45 different asset managers offering their portfolios to the investment market in South Africa. As at 31 March 2025, the total market capitalisation of the SA Exchange Traded Product industry was R233,6 billion, making this an important and growing part of the local investment and savings market. From what was initially a passive or index based dominated base of products, the industry has become much more dynamic with the introduction of actively managed funds and instruments.
The SALTA awards reward issuers for the best investment returns over periods of 3, 5 and 10 years, as well as awards for tracking efficiency and the net capital raised from the creation of ETP securities over the past 3 years. The awards are made in various categories, for best foreign and local referenced equity, bonds, currency and commodity ETPs.
In addition, the SALTA organisers conduct a public survey through a dedicated website, to ascertain the “People's Choice” of their favourite Exchange Traded Product. Here again Satrix was successful, with the Satrix 40 ETF winning the popularity contest for local market products, as well as Satrix MSCI World ETF, coming out top in the category for foreign referenced ETPs.
For the past two years, actively managed ETPs are also included for consideration in the SALTA Awards. The FNB Global Equity Growth AMC (FNBGEG) won the Award for the actively managed foreign equity AMC over the past 3 year period, whilst the Nedbank Private Wealth Global AMC (UNPWGP) won an Award for the most capital (R2 billion) raised from new securities issued.
Seven of the twelve ETP issuing houses were amongst the 21 SALTA Award winners for the year ended December 2024. Click here to view a list of all Award winners in each category.

More About the SALTA Awards
The South African Listed Tracker (SALTA) Awards are a joint initiative between four service providers to the ETP industry in South Africa. They are:
- The Johannesburg Stock Exchange - JSE Limited
- The London Stock Exchange Group - LSEG
- Profile Data (Pty) Ltd. - Profile Data
- etfSA
These four organisations are the sponsors, organisers and host the Awards, which are now in their seventh year.
For the winners, the SALTA Awards are becoming more and more prestigious and the SALTA trophies and certificates are proudly displayed in Boardrooms and in the marketing and advertising campaigns of the Award winners.
A rigorous analysis of daily NAV pricing and data generated from trading on the JSE is used to assess the winners of the various categories. The SALTA Awards not only reward investment returns, but also excellence in product performance, in areas such as tracking and trading error, raising of new capital, etc. Only quantitative assessments have been utilised and no subjective judgements are made.
