PROFILE SHOCKED AT "THUNDER" AD

Johannesburg, 20 September 2001

Profile Media, publisher of the JSE Handbook, is shocked at the "Thunder" ad which appeared in Business Day today (Thursday 20 September 2001).

The ad, placed by The Investors' Guide, gives the impression that Profile has agreed to a "battle" on radio and TV with The Investors' Guide. The ad was placed without Profile being consulted in any way.

Profile say the ad is misleading and designed to confuse investors. The ad gives the impression it was placed by Profile, or at least with Profile's knowledge. Profile knew nothing about the ad until it appeared in the paper.

The ad is misleading on several other counts.

The ad implies that Profile has recently approached the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) with a complaint. In fact, the ASA closed its file on the matter months ago. They found in Profile's favour on eight complaints of misleading advertising by The Investors' Guide, including the claim by the Investors' Guide that it is "the only JSE working manual".

The unauthorised use of the JSE's logo gives the impression the ad may have some sort of official status, which it does not.

The ad suggests that Profile previously "accepted" the slogan of The Investors' Guide, which is false.

Profile will complain to the ASA about the ad.
