With the meltdown of 2008 still in investors’ minds, the shock of Brexit and the US election result have added to investor uncertainty and market volatility. Investment choices across the board are made even more difficult by the explosion of funds available to South African investors. A wide range of hedge funds were also recently added to the investment mainstream.

There are now over 1 300 SA domiciled rand-denominated Collective Investment Schemes (unit trusts and other funds) to choose from, as well as a range of offshore funds registered for sale in SA.

For nearly three years, investment managers have found it progressively more difficult to compete with their peers for performance and management awards. This is evidenced by the increased number of boutique and specialist investment managers achieving honours at the last Raging Bull Awards, which have traditionally been dominated by funds in the stables of larger institutions.
